| Saturday, June 27, 2009 | | | The Wonders of Technology - if only we could have it all | | I'm walking down a strange street, it seems like I'm in the future, no one else is walking except me, they seem to be in some sort of contraption that has wheels. Boy do they look fun! Almost everyone else seems to have a very small chocolate bar at their ear and they are busy talking, to whom I have no idea. Everyone seems so busy while I wander this strange new world.
There are these huge rectangular squares everywhere I go, every one of them showing a different thing. I stop and look at one, it's a huge fairly dry plain and a lion is waiting among the grass, there is a deer grazing some grass nearby, the lion jumps out of its hiding and pursues the now running deer. I look at another and there is a man telling me something about the weather in New York, Chicago, Seattle and many other places which I have never heard of before. I look at the others and they are telling me a lot of different things. This is very exciting.
I wander further down the street then I see one very outstanding shop, it's light are so mesmerizing, they are practically beckoning me to enter the shop. As I stand at the entrance to the shop, the doors open, welcoming me; as I enter the shop, it feels cool and comfortable. I take a few more steps and there is this very bright flash that instantly blinds my eyes. A piece of paper appears in a machine in front of me, a person next to the machine passes me the piece of paper and I see my startled self. I ask the person, what is that machine. He said it's a camera and tells me it takes pictures. Since the man seemed rather friendly, I asked him why is it cooler in here than it is outside. He says: “Why, we have air conditioning! See that box like thing over there? That's an air conditioner. It makes the air cooler”. I am simply amazed.
I explore further into the shop, my eyes wide with amazement. There was a lady using a contraption on the floor, she seems to be cleaning it. I walk up to her and ask her about it. She looks irritated and tells me it is the latest bagless vacuum cleaner, she continues cleaning the floor and I see that the “vacuum cleaner” makes the dirt on the floor missing. It just seems like magic.
A explore further and I see a man throwing a basket of clothes in a machine. I asks the man if he's throwing away his clothes. He gave me a very odd look and said “Of course not! I'm just washing it.” I said: “Washing it? Don't you need a river for that?” He laughs and takes a seat. I take a seat next to him and wait. Time goes by and the machine makes a beeping sound. He tells me the clothes are done. He takes them out and show me, I take a shirt and look at it, my oh my, it's just like a new one!
I thank the man for showing me such an impressive invention and begin walking away, As I start walking I begin floating and soon I hear the cock crowing and I wake up from the world full of wonder and amazement. I look out of my window and see the Sun rising. I take my basket of clothes wandering on the floor to the river nearby. There are a few people washing their clothes there. I wash my face and begin to wash my clothes. My mind begins to wandering and I keep thinking of all the machines and contraptions that seem so magical.
I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there was a machine to help me wash my clothes now. Then I wouldn't need to wake up early in the morning to wash them. I look around and see the Sun rising. “Oh what a beautiful sight!” I thought to myself. Wouldn't it be nice if I could just capture the beauty of it. Ah! If only I had a camera to take the picture of the Sun.
I finish washing my clothes and walk home. I left my door open allowing the dust to be blown in and settle comfortably on my floor. I begin sweeping the floor with a broom, and started thinking, If only I had that vacuum cleaner that lady in the shop was using, I'll be done sweeping in no time. I wonder how I could get one, then remembered it was just a dream.
It is afternoon and the tin can near the window rattles. My neighbour, Kara is trying to contact me. I retrieve the tin can and pull it to make the string tense. She invites me for a nice afternoon walk. I told her not in this blistering heat. Maybe later in the day. I take a nap and hope I could get rid of the heat by returning to the cool and comfortable shop, if only there was such a thing as an air conditioner.
It is night and I attend an outdoor theatre with Kara. It was the same show they played every other day. If only I had that odd rectangle that showed me all kinds of different things. That would be so much fun. I return home swiftly after the show in hope of dreaming of that magical world once more. | | | Posted by Tan Soo Wen at 11:26 AM | | __________________________________ | |
